Samson and His Sin (Part 2)

1) Sin Finds You

Samson was already experiencing the power of God in his life (Judges 13:25). Then, he began to allow his lust toreign. (Read Judges 14:1-2). Lust is intense or unbridled sexual desire. The Greek word is epithumia, a longing for what is forbidden. What was forbidden in Samson’s life? A Philistine woman! He just broke the Mosaic law in Exodus 34:16 and in Deut. 7:3. She was not an Israelite. Samson’s mom and dad objected (v.3) and rightly so! Today, a Christian should not marry a non-Christian. 2 Cor. 6:14 states: “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?” Pastor and author Chuck Swindoll states that when a Christian falls into sin, they fall in one or several of these four areas: Silver, Self, Sloth, and Sex. The process of Samson’s willful and lustful disobedience had begun! Satan knew Samson’s weakness for women, and he immediately began to capitalize on it. 1 Peter 5:8-9 states: “Be sober (self-controlled), be vigilant (watchful), because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” To catch a certain type of fish, you have to use a certain type of bait. One generic type of bait will not catch every fish. Satan is brilliant! He knows the right type of bait for each man and woman. Satan does not use generic bait. One size does not fit all! The bait that he will use on you will be different than the bait he uses on me. In other words, he knows what stimulates you and me sexually; therefore, he knows how to bait our carnal nature. Preachers: Pastor Carl Triplett states: “If the devil can get a preacher to commit adultery, then he has done something.” James 1:13-15 states: “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death.” We are by nature sinners (Romans 3:23). Even after conversion, Satan works overtime to defeat God’s children. Prov. 6:23-29 states: “For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life, to keep you from the evil woman, from the flattering tongue of a seductress. Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, nor let her allure you with her eyelids. For by means of a harlot a man is reduced to a crust of bread; And an adulteress will prey upon his precious life. Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be seared? So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; Whoever touches her shall not be innocent.” Dr. John Phillips states: “The Bible regards adultery as a defilement with mental, physical, and spiritual consequences.” Satan knew Samson’s weakness and he immediately went to work.
